Coaches Personal Coaching Philosophy

Statement from Roger Downing (Head Coach)

My objectives are to implement a whole club structure that provides opportunities for all swimmers.  In creating an open and transparent club we can produce equity throughout our membership and coaching.  I aim to encourage three way communications between the coach, swimmer and parent/carer.  I plan to provide support for all, motivation, education and therefore commitment from all parties is paramount.

I aim to build on the club's present training structure:

Liaise closely with Swim Torquay’s and other Swim schools  ‘Learn to Swim' organisers, to produce a natural progression into competition swimming.

Create a Club based squad which swims for fitness but also has the opportunity to compete     and develop.

Produce a highly successful competitive structure ensuring success at Regional through to National Level.  Through continual monitoring and updating of knowledge and qualification I believe the club's coaching team will be in a strong position to build on an already successful history at Open, Club County and Regional levels.  I will support all swimmers and help my coaching team provide guidance, support and advice.

I strongly believe that all children matter.  Therefore, we should provide a safe and friendly environment in which to encourage our swimmers to develop and hone new skills.  By setting the clubs sights on all levels of competition we can promote high levels of self esteem and confidence in our swimmers through individual and group achievement.

Over the next few years I plan to help improve the level of swimming with the club and make Torquay Leander  a well respected and competitive club with continuing success.
